Kids Recipe Contest
September 7th, 2013

Calling all parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and teachers in California! September is Food Literacy Awareness Month. We want your help spreading food literacy education with this fun recipe contest for California K-6th grade students.

Does your kid love to cook? Help him or her submit an original recipe highlighting the Veggie of the Year — Sweet Potato.

1 winner will be selected from each of the following age categories:

  • Kindergarten – 1st Grade
  • 2nd – 3rd Grade
  • 4th – 6th Grade

Download the application form: Kids Recipe Contest Entry Form

Fill out the form and return it no later than Monday, September 30, 2013 by 12 p.m. noon (PST) to info@foodliteracycenter.org or mail to California Food Literacy Center, 170 Sandburg Drive, Sacramento, CA 95819.

Judges will select the winning recipe based on the following criteria:

  • Use of Veggie of the Year: sweet potato. Is the vegetable hidden in the recipe, or is it allowed to shine through?
  • Understanding of “food literacy.” Recipe and accompanying story and/or picture should express an understanding of “food literacy.” Is it nutritious*? Is it sustainable for our planet and community? Did the child learn something new about the Veggie of the Year? You may want to do some Internet research to help you learn more.
  • Flavor. Does it taste good?
  • Appropriate for age group in level of difficulty. Is this a recipe that another child in this age group can make with minimal adult supervision? Is this a recipe that was created by the child?
  • Originality.

Facebook Voting & Judging

On October 2, 2013, all semi-finalists’ recipes will be posted on California Food Literacy Center’s Facebook page. Fans will be asked to vote for their favorites.

Round Two–Finals:
Facebook fans will vote for the top 3 recipes from each age group. These finalists will be invited to our recipe party on October 13, 2013 in Sacramento, where a team of local chefs and food writers will select and announce one winner from each age group.
